The 1959/60 EuroLeague season brought together 21 team, but two of those withdrew in the early stages of competition. This season featured two Soviet teams – ASK Rīga as the reigning champions, and Tbilisi Dinamo as the Soviet League champions. Eventually, the Soviets dominated the competition, as both of their teams successfully advanced to the Finals.
Individually, it was an excellent season for several players, but two stood out the most. The Polonia Warsaw leader, Janusz Wichowski, had a sensational streak on the offensive side, leading the league in scoring with 29.2 points per game. He helped Polonia to reach the semifinals, where they lost to Dinamo Tbilisi. The other star, who took all the spotlight once again was the ASK Rīga leader – Jānis Krūmiņš. He set a record that still stands to this day. Leading thr ASK to their third consecutive title and being the Finals MVP once again, Krūmiņš became the only player in EuroLeague history who has won three consecutive EuroLeague titles and Finals MVP awards combined.
The Latvian giant had a great duel in the Finals against Dinamo Tbilisi team’s young center, the 210-centimeters-tall Georgian, Anzor Lezhava, who averaged 14.4 points per game throughout the season. The more experienced Krūmiņš confidently outplayed his counterpart, averaging 21.5 points per game in the Finals, and leading ASK to two solid victories.
The ASK Rīga team completed their three-peat in 1960, and it remains one of only two teams in EuroLeague history that have recorded a three-peat. The second team to do it was KK Split from 1989 to 1991.
