The Soviet basketball legend Gennady Volnov was born 28 November, 1939 in Moscow, Soviet Union. The 201-centimeters-tall forward/center had an illustrious career, winning all the possible major accolades in basketball while representing CSKA Moscow (1958-1970) and the Soviet national team.
The 19-year-old Volnov joined the Soviet powerhouse – CSKA Moscow in 1958. He made his EuroLeague debut in 1960/61 season, being one of the leading players of the season, and helping CSKA to win its first EuroLeague title. Volnov scored 96 points in 6 games, averaging 16.0 points per game.
In the following seasons, Volnov continued to be an integral part of the CSKA roster. The Soviet side was regularly among the best EuroLeague teams, winning two more titles in 1963 and 1969 with Volnov being one of league’s leading players. He was fifth-best scorer in the 1962/63 season, scoring 175 points in 11 games, averaging 15.9 points per game. It was his most successful year individually. In total, the Soviet bigman played 7 seasons in the EuroLeague, scoring 682 games in 52 games, averaging 13.1 points per game.
The CSKA were unstoppable in the USSR Premier League during his career. Volnov won 10 league titles, missing the gold medals just twice (1967, 1968). He retired from basketball in 1972, at the age of 33.
He was a key player in the Soviet Union national team, winning every major title – the gold at the 1972 Olympics, as wll as FIBA World Cup (1967) and 6 consecutive Eurobasket titles from 1959 to 1969. In his EuroLeague and international games from 1959 to 1970, Volnov scored 1598 points in 148 games.
