Rene Aerts

The Belgian basketball legend Rene Aerts was born 3 January, 1937 in Antwerp, Belgium. The 184-centimeter-tall point guard enjoyed a successful career in the Belgian League, representing Antwerpse BC (1951-1962, 1969-70), Standard Liege (1962-1969), Hellas Giant (1970-1972), Racing Molenbeek (1972-1974), and CEF Fleurus (1974-1976) team. On the national level, Aerts won six Belgian League titles.

In 1958/59 season, Aerts made his Euroleague debut with Antwerpse. In total, the Belgian point guard played 5 seasons in the EuroLeague, reaching the semifinals stage in 1968/69 season, while being one of the leading scorers, and averaging 15.4 points per game. He was ranked Top 10 in EuroLeague season’s best scorers list three times. Aerts finished his EuroLeague career with 550 points in 28 games, averaging 19.6 points per game.

Aerts was a regular Belgian national team member, playing in 4 Eurobasket editions (1959, 1961, 1963, 1967) and scoring 444 points in 32 games. In his EuroLeague and international games from 1958 to 1969, Aerts scored 994 points in 60 games.

The Belgian retired from professional basketball in 1976, at the age of 39.
